When you apply for a job you have one chance to get noticed and maybe get through to the next stage, that of an interview.   Your best chance is to have a well wrtitten CV and a covering letter that really stands out.   Many recruitment consultants will first of all skim read the CV and covering letter and only if first impressions are good will they then take longer to actually read the key detail that will get you through the door.

The CV really must catch their eye.  Spelling mistakes and generally bad grammar and layout will immediately put you at an immense disadvantage and probably mean you won't be considered further.   The recipient of the CV will be going through a large number of applicants to create a shortlist so you must do all you can to get shortlisted.

If you are dealing with an agency, it could be worth your while phoning them to discuss your application.    This will at least mean that they read your CV and discuss with you the role you applied for.  It also gives you a chance to talk about your strengths and skills and maybe discuss other roles that the recruiter has on the books that might be even more suitable for you.

In the UK, you should not include a photograph of yourself in your CV however if you intend to apply for jobs in Europe then it is recommended for this version.   Do not include date of birth on your CV and similarly you are not required to put marital status.

When you apply for jobs then you include a covering letter, or email, that explains why you are applying and identifies the skills and experience relevant to the role.   This should be unique to each application.
